Linda Kelley Animal Shelter

FMD Architects partnered with Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter to provide a Facilities Assessment of their existing tri-county shelter, master planning for the new shelter specific to Calvert County, design, full architectural services, engineering (with Design Learned engineers) and interior design. We provided full SD, DD, and CD documents and met with the county board members at the end of each phase. We assisted in full construction administration with the developer/builder including closeout documents.

The layout allows for intake and surrender areas to be separated from adoption and healthy animal housing for efficiency of operations, energy efficiency, acoustic control and a better adoption experience. Employee and volunteer spaces are also separated, and the building is capped by a sally-port garage for animal control vehicle storage and safer intake. Outdoor relief and play access are provided directly from the various housing areas. An open-air pavilion is located near the entrance for public use.

The facility includes a multi-purpose community room for fundraisers, parties, and events. FMD worked as the architectural team for the design-builder, Generation Properties, with zero change orders. Interior design elements include flooring for odor containment and easier biologic cleanup, as well as soothing wall colors and woodgrain details to create a welcoming and soothing environment. The new layout, functionality and fear-free design for the animals has led to an increase in adoptions. The building was designed with multiple zones for optimal HVAC control and energy efficiency, and with the ability to grow internally to meet the needs of the community for the next 30-40 years without additional facility construction and resource use.
