Paws with a Cause
FMD Architects provided comprehensive architectural design services for the transformation and expansion of an existing Headquarters and Canine Development Facility in Wayland, Texas. The project included two major renovations and a new addition, thoughtfully designed to support the organization’s growing breeding, veterinary care, boarding, and specialized service dog training programs for decades to come.
The 29,000-square-foot Headquarters renovation brings essential operations together under one roof, including dedicated breeding and whelping areas, boarding facilities, a full-service veterinary clinic, administrative offices, and a Puppy Park. These integrated spaces support every stage of service dog development, from early care and socialization to specialized training tailored to each client’s individual needs, lifestyle, and environment.
The 23,500-square-foot Canine Development Facility renovation reimagines training, boarding, and office spaces to create a highly functional and adaptable learning environment. At the heart of the facility is “Main Street,” an innovative, real-world training environment featuring a simulated apartment, grocery store, café, and streetscape. These immersive spaces allow service dogs to develop essential skills and confidence in settings that replicate the everyday environments they will encounter alongside their future handlers.
A new 4,300-square-foot boarding addition further expands the facility’s capacity, supporting the health, comfort, and daily care of dogs throughout their training journey.
Together, these improvements create a purpose-built campus that prioritizes animal welfare, operational efficiency, and the specialized environments required to develop highly trained assistance dogs. The result is a flexible, forward-thinking facility designed to support the organization’s mission and evolving needs well into the future.
