Barberton Elementary School West

Barberton Elementary School West is an 86,400-square-foot K–4 school designed by FMD Architects. The $16.8 million project brings together daylit classrooms, outdoor learning areas, and recreational spaces to support elementary education. Developed through the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission’s Classroom Facilities Assistance Program (OFCC-CFAP), the school combines academic spaces with opportunities for learning and activity outdoors.

Barberton Elementary School West Design

The two-story facility follows the natural contours of the existing property. This approach connects the building’s form to its setting, making the site’s topography an integral part of the school’s architectural design.

Academic classrooms receive natural daylight from the north and south sides of the building. Bringing daylight into these spaces supports comfort and efficiency while creating bright environments for teaching and learning. The classroom design and the building’s relationship to the site are central features of this elementary school architecture project.

Outdoor Learning and Recreation

Learning opportunities at Barberton Elementary School West extend beyond the classroom. Several outdoor learning areas give teachers additional settings for lessons and student activities. These spaces complement the indoor academic environments and provide opportunities to incorporate the outdoors into the school day.

A large playground and athletic fields add space for movement, recreation, and play. Together, these amenities create a campus that accommodates both classroom instruction and outdoor activity.

The project used a Multiple Prime delivery method with a Construction Manager serving as Agent.
